Samsung’s Bixby Evolution

Samsung is set to enhance its voice assistant Bixby, introducing an upgraded version later this year that will leverage the company’s proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) models. TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile business, revealed this development in an interview with CNBC. This announcement places Samsung amid the resurgent interest in digital assistants, driven by the popularity of AI technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The new iteration of Bixby will utilize Samsung’s large language model (LLM), marking a significant advancement in its capabilities.

Bixby, which made its debut in 2017 alongside the Galaxy S8 smartphone, is designed to perform a range of tasks including live translations and providing restaurant recommendations. One of its key features, Bixby Vision, allows users to scan objects using their phone’s camera and receive relevant information. While there have been hints about an upgraded Bixby, this is the first time Samsung has confirmed a specific timeline for its release.

Generative AI and LLM Integration

Generative AI, the technology underpinning the new voice assistant Bixby upgrade, refers to AI that can create content such as answers to questions or images. The large language model (LLM) at the core of this technology is trained on vast datasets, enabling it to generate coherent and contextually appropriate content. “We’re going to advance Bixby with the application of Gen AI technology,” Roh stated, underscoring Samsung’s commitment to enhancing its digital assistant through cutting-edge AI advancements.

Despite this significant upgrade, Samsung will continue to support multiple voice assistants on its devices. For instance, Google’s AI assistant will remain available on the latest Samsung devices. This strategy ensures that users have access to a variety of digital assistant options, catering to diverse preferences and needs.

AI-Powered Future and Product Strategy

Roh’s confirmation of the Bixby upgrade comes shortly after Apple announced a similar AI enhancement for its assistant, Siri, which will integrate capabilities from OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This move by Samsung is part of a broader strategy to embed AI features across its product lineup. On Wednesday, Samsung introduced two new foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, along with new AI tools designed to encourage consumers to upgrade to premium smartphones.

“We are reinforcing and bringing more AI capabilities to our products,” Roh emphasized. He believes that as consumers experience the convenience and benefits of these AI capabilities, it will drive them to purchase new Samsung products. By continuously enhancing the AI features in their devices, Samsung aims to maintain a competitive edge and meet the evolving demands of tech-savvy consumers.

This year’s voice assistant Bixby upgrade signifies Samsung’s dedication to advancing its technological offerings and solidifying its position in the AI and mobile markets.
